If you are like most people you have accumulated a collection of prescription and over-the-counter medications - many of which are no longer needed or have expired.
Wastewater treatment plants like Union Sanitary District's are designed to handle normal household wastes. Pharmaceuticals flushed into the sewer system can pass into San Francisco Bay, where they may have an impact on fish and wildlife.
Many children and the elderly are victims of accidental poisonings due to medication in the home. More teens abuse prescription and over-the-counter drugs than any illicit drug (other than marijuana.)
USD is pleased to support the rollout of MED-Project Pharmaceutical Take-back kiosks throughout Alameda County. There are currently 72 kiosks in the County located in pharmacies and law enforcement agencies. These kiosks are for residents to safely dispose of unwanted and expired medications at no cost to the consumer.
This program is growing and more kiosk locations will continue to be added.

MED-Project is a Limited Liability Company funded by the pharmaceutical industry in response to the Alameda County Safe Drug Disposal Ordinance of 2012 that has since been amended to include sharps.
